What’s the difference between CBD & THC?

In short, while they are both derived from the cannabis plant, THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol) are two common cannabinoids that are very different in function and effect.

THC is known for providing the more traditional ‘high’, offering a more intense, euphoric, psychoactive experience that is commonly applied in alleviating nausea, appetite loss, insomnia. In other words, THC-dominant pot is what’s typically responsible for turning people into mega-chill couch potatoes, but for some, the ‘heady’ effects can be too much.

In contrast, CBD has very different, less-intoxicating properties, and thus offers a very different experience, providing a great choice for someone seeking relief of symptoms related to pain-management, inflammation, anxiety, or other chronic conditions.

For a more balanced buzz, finding strains that offer a 1:1 ratio of CBD/THC can offer the best of both worlds, offering support for pain-relief, while offering a more mellow high for those sensitive to the effects of THC.

What’s the difference between Hemp and Cannabis?

While cannabis and hemp are two varieties of the same species, Cannabis sativa L, there are many differences between these two types of plants!

Perhaps the most significant being that smoking hemp does not produce the psychoactive “high” that is familiar to those that smoke dried cannabis flower.

Why? Because hemp has to contain less than 0.3% THC to be legally available for sale. In contrast, there is no legal limit for its CBD concentration, which typically averages at about 20% and up, making it a great source for CBD products.

CBD can also be sourced from cannabis plants, but typically in lower concentrations (10% and up). However, with the increasing popularity of CBD products, more CBD-dominant strains are being developed to accommodate the public’s thirst for CBD!

But to be clear, CBD is CBD – it’s a specific compound of cannabis that is present in either the cannabis or hemp plant.

Therefore, while CBD can be derived from either the hemp plant or a cannabis plant, because hemp plants have typically offered higher concentrations of CBD, which is why it being increasingly used as a preferred source for CBD extraction for oils, tinctures and the like.

Are Indica/Sativa/Hybrids still a thing? If so, what’s the diff’?

Though traditionally it was thought that the effects of cannabis could be differentiated between the categories of cultivars, Indica, Sativa, and Hybrids, as research evolves, we are learning that an individual’s experience of cannabis is influenced by many more factors, such as terpenes, method of consumption, genetics, environment and more.

What does this mean? It means times are indeed changing and with the influx of more countries legalizing cannabis use and cultivation, much-needed research is now becoming available to understand more about this magical plant. Whew! Stay tuned to our blog to learn more!

What are Terpenes?

Terpenes are the naturally occurring compounds that provide the aroma and flavour in cannabis and a variety of other plants. With over 100 identified terpenes in the cannabis plant, there are 8 that are most commonly found in the composition of available cannabis strains, including the more citrus-oriented effect of the Limonene terpene, to the more-woodsy scent exuded by the Pinene terpene. And yes, the range is far broader, included more fruity, spicy, flower-y-oriented terpenes as well! So that blueberry kush you’re loving? It’s not named that for just any ol’ reason ;)

Research is showing that terpenes also play a significant role in differentiating the various effects of cannabis strains through their synergistic interaction with cannabinoids, so indeed, do your research and follow your nose to find out!

How long does the ‘high’ from cannabis last?

Your experience of cannabis depends on how you’ve ingested it, what kind you ingested and how much, for that matter. Typically, the experience of smoking weed, whether in the form of a joint or pipe, means that you should expect to notice the effects immediately, with an expected duration of 1-3 hours. Learn more here.

I haven’t touched weed in a long time, and now I’m scared of where to start – I don’t want to bug out, what would you recommend starting with first?

Though you can learn all about this here, in short, this phrase is commonly said for a reason: start low and go slow. No need to smoke a fat blunt, or eat three brownies to assess what ‘being high’ is all about. Nope, not at all. A little bit goes a long way, so do your research on beginner strains (i.e. products with low THC levels or an equal amount of CBD), ensure you’re in a comfortable, safe environment with good pals, and enjoy!
